Where to stay in Phú Quốc: Dương Đông, Sunset Town or Bãi Khem

Phú Quốc is longer than most people expect, and its three main areas make for three completely different holidays. This is written from the south of the island, so we’ll also tell you what is inconvenient here — pick the wrong area and the whole trip bends around it.

Dương Đông & Bãi Trường — the busy side

This is the island’s old centre plus the long Bãi Trường strip running down the west coast. The night market, the most restaurants, the most bars, and most of the big resorts are here. If your trip is built around eating out, shopping and not having to travel for dinner, this is the easiest base.

The trade-off: it is crowded, and the sand along Bãi Trường is generally not as fine as in the south, with murkier water in the windy months.

Sunset Town — beautiful in the evening, quiet at noon

A new master-planned area at the southern tip, Mediterranean in style, with the Kiss Bridge and the Hòn Thơm cable-car station. It fills up in the late afternoon when everyone comes for the sunset and the show; during the day it is fairly empty.

It suits anyone who wants to be right inside that scenery and doesn’t mind a day that concentrates into the evening. Worth knowing: this is a place to look at, not the island’s main swimming beach.

Bãi Khem & An Thới — the quietest, the finest sand

Bãi Khem sits on the southern coast: soft white sand and clear water — in 2018 Flight Network named it one of the Top 50 most beautiful beaches in the world. An Thới next door is the harbour for the three-island boat trips. The whole area is far quieter than Dương Đông.

It suits a slow holiday: the beach in the morning, the cable car or Sao Beach in the afternoon, dinner near where you sleep. It does not suit anyone who wants somewhere new to go every night.

Travel times from Bãi Khem

Straight talk: what you give up in the south

The night market and most of the island’s restaurants are in Dương Đông, 25–30 minutes away by car. Grab is unreliable in the south — drivers are sparse and most are on charter tours, so you may wait a long time or get nothing. Mai Linh and Vinasun taxis are easier to catch, and any hotel can call a trusted car.

The simplest fix is a scooter (around 150,000–200,000₫ a day) or the hotel’s own transfers. Know this in advance and the south is easy; don’t, and it feels remote.

Want fine sand, quiet, an actual rest: Bãi Khem.
